The power of cliche

One of the big weaknesses of the fantasy genre is it's fondness for cliche. Every other story, it seems features the same characters, the same stock situations. Is it any wonder then that the stories enjoying the most success these days are the one that either take the familiar tropes and subvert them...or ignore them entirely?

Still, in the end, "there is nothing new under the sun..."
